A medical report from Graphic Era Hospital has revealed the grave extent of injuries suffered by 24-year-old Tripura student Anjel Chakma, who succumbed on December 26 following a brutal assault in Dehradun.

According to the clinical findings Anjel sustained deep lacerations on his back and the occipital region of his head, along with multiple abrasions on his foot. Doctors recorded complete loss of motor power on the right side of his body, affecting both upper and lower limbs. The report further noted sensory deficits, spinal cord injuries, and fissures in the brain—clear indicators of severe neurological trauma.

The incident dates back to December 9, when Anjel and his brother, Michael Chakma, were allegedly subjected to racially abusive remarks by a group of intoxicated men near a roadside canteen in the Selakui police station area. Police said the situation escalated rapidly after the brothers protested, leading to a violent assault. Anjel was reportedly struck with a sharp-edged weapon and a metal kada during the attack.

Senior Superintendent of Police Ajai Singh stated that the accused appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and that the confrontation spiralled out of control within minutes. After sustaining severe blows to his head and back, Anjel collapsed at the spot and was rushed to Graphic Era Hospital. He remained under treatment for over 17 days before succumbing to his injuries.

Following a complaint by the family, Dehradun Police registered an FIR and constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT). So far, five individuals have been arrested, including two minors who have been sent to a juvenile reform home. The arrested accused have been identified as Avnish Negi, Shaurya Rajput, Suraj Khwas, Sumit, and Ayush Baroni.

Police said one suspect remains absconding and is believed to have fled to Nepal. A reward of ₹25,000 has been announced for information leading to his arrest, and a separate team has been dispatched to trace his whereabouts.

The Uttarakhand government has taken serious note of the incident. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami condemned the assault as “completely unacceptable” and assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible.

Investigators have since added murder charges to the case, and further investigation is ongoing.
