ripura is moving steadily toward power self-sufficiency with ambitious plans to harness both river and solar energy. The state government has identified 10 river sites for hydrokinetic power projects, which are expected to generate 185 MW of electricity from flowing rivers.
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced this during the bhoomi pujan ceremony of the upcoming Super ECBC building at Banamalipur, Agartala.
The Minister emphasized the importance of adopting modern technology to drive progress. “Our government is committed to embracing new technologies to ensure sustainable development,” he said. “We are investing Rs 12.33 crore in this Super ECBC building, one of five such projects under construction nationwide, with a focus on energy efficiency.”
Tripura currently has a peak power demand of 378 MW, which is expected to rise to 650 MW by 2031. “Development depends on electricity. Presently, we provide an average of 23 hours 54 minutes of power daily across the state, despite occasional trippings,” he noted. The number of electricity consumers in the state has risen from 7.21 lakh in 2018 to 10.57 lakh, reflecting the state’s progress.
Highlighting solar energy initiatives, the Minister said, “If 5 lakh families install 2 kW rooftop solar panels under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the state could generate 1,000 MW of electricity daily, boosting self-reliance and supporting economic growth. This will increase Tripura’s GDP and per capita income.”
The government also plans to install solar power systems in 2,000 government buildings, with work already underway. Completion of this project by next year is expected to generate 80 MW of electricity. So far, 15,000 people have installed solar systems, collectively generating 6 MW.
On hydrokinetic power, Minister Nath added, “Tripura has potential to generate 185 MW from flowing rivers using Hydrokinetic Turbine Technology. The identified sites include Chakmaghat, Maharani, Dumboor, Natunbazar, Kalsi, Manu, Kulai, Feni, Dhalai River, and Sangan in Ampi, Lakhipur. Work on these projects will begin next month.”
He concluded by stressing the state’s commitment to renewable energy: “As gas resources deplete, adopting new technologies in the power sector is essential for Tripura’s sustainable growth.”
