Tripura Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury today announced that the iconic Chabimura archaeological and eco-tourism site in Gomati district will be beautified and developed into a world-class destination within the next 10 months, with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

An amount of ₹60 crore has been allocated for the project, of which nearly 35 percent of the work has already been completed.

Speaking during his third inspection visit to the site, the minister said the project is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed by October, with the facility being formally handed over to the public by December.

Chabimura, also known as Chobimura, is one of Tripura’s most significant heritage and nature tourism locations. Situated along the Gomati River and surrounded by dense forests, the site is renowned for its ancient rock carvings of Hindu deities such as Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Durga, etched into towering cliff faces. Often referred to as the “Mini Amazon of Tripura,” the destination is accessible by boat and is popular for its breathtaking natural beauty, trekking routes, birdwatching opportunities, and serene river views. The massive Durga carving remains its most striking attraction.

“We are working to develop this tourist spot while preserving its natural environment,” Chowdhury said. “Chabimura has gained recognition across the nation. If we can add basic amenities and meet public demand, we can make it a world-class destination, and we are moving in that direction.”

As part of the development plan, the site will feature 26 eco-friendly log huts, a cafeteria, children’s play area, landscaped surroundings, paved pathways, and other essential tourist amenities designed to enhance visitor comfort without disturbing the ecological balance.

Highlighting the government’s renewed focus on tourism, the minister said that although tourism was declared an industry in the previous year, no concrete steps were taken earlier to develop the sector. “After our government came to power, we have initiated multiple projects including Chabimura, Narikel Kunja, and adventure tourism initiatives,” he said.

Chowdhury emphasized that tourism will play a crucial role in generating livelihoods across the North-East in the coming days and help position the region as a major tourism hub for the entire country.
