A woman in Kailashahar allegedly died by suicide after facing prolonged financial distress and mounting pressure to repay multiple microfinance loans, according to Pratibha Sinha, a police officer at the Kailashahar Women’s Police Station. The incident has cast a pall of grief over the local community in East Kaulikura village.

The deceased, identified as Anjana Malakar, was a resident of Ward No. 3 of East Kaulikura under the Kaulikura Gram Panchayat, which falls within the Gournagar Block of Kailashahar subdivision. Anjana and her husband, Parimal Malakar, were daily wage laborers struggling to make ends meet.

Police officer Pratibha Sinha stated that Anjana had taken out multiple loans from different microfinance institutions. Unable to repay the installments on time, she reportedly became overwhelmed by the increasing financial pressure.

Local villagers said that due to the lack of steady work opportunities in their village and surrounding areas, Anjana had borrowed money from at least three microfinance organizations, including Bandhan and Bharat. Whenever she or her husband managed to get temporary work, they paid the installments. But during long periods without employment, the couple fell behind on repayment.

According to residents, recovery agents from the microfinance companies frequently visited their home, urging Anjana to repay overdue installments. With no stable income and mounting pressure, she appeared to lose hope.

Unable to find any way out of the spiraling debt, Anjana reportedly went into a nearby forest close to her home and died by hanging. She had been missing since Friday afternoon, 5 December, around 4 p.m.

Her husband, Parimal, searched for her throughout the village and at relatives’ homes but could not locate her. On the morning of 6 December, around 10 a.m., villagers discovered her body hanging from a tree in the forest near their home. They immediately informed the Kailashahar Women’s Police Station.

Police reached the scene, brought down the body, and later sent it to the Unakoti District Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The tragic incident has sparked sorrow and concern in the community, highlighting the growing challenge of indebtedness and financial instability among rural laborers in the region.
