The Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress (TPYC) has lodged a serious complaint with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, alleging that the Indian Railways network in Tripura is being misused to transport illegal drugs and banned cough syrups into the state.
In a letter signed by TPYC President Neel Kamal Saha, the youth wing expressed “deep pain, concern and resentment,” claiming that the railway system—once seen as a symbol of development—has become a conduit for narcotics smuggling.
The letter cites a recent incident at Jirania Railway Station, where two rail wagons (numbers 30030010892 and 31032457043) were reportedly caught carrying large quantities of contraband substances, including cough syrup “Fensidil,” on October 15, 2025. The TPYC alleged that despite the seizure, “no arrests have been made so far,” and accused local law enforcement of being “afraid to act against influential persons.”
“Never did we imagine that the railways, which brought hope of progress, would be used as a means to import drugs and narcotics into our small, peaceful state,” the letter stated.
“Instead of employment, our youth are being turned into drug addicts and carriers.”
The Youth Congress also accused “leaders of the ruling BJP government, along with dishonest merchants and brokers,” of being involved in the drug trade, further alleging that the nexus has made Tripura “a corridor of narcotics in South-East Asia.”
Calling for immediate action, Saha urged the Railway Minister to investigate the alleged involvement of railway officials and to ensure the “earliest arrest and strict punishment” of those responsible.
No official response has yet been issued by the Ministry of Railways or Tripura Police regarding the allegations.
