Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr Manik Saha on Wednesday said discussions on a possible alliance for the upcoming Village Council (VC) elections are currently underway and expressed confidence that the talks would yield a positive outcome.

Saha made the statement a day after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The meeting comes at a crucial juncture as political parties prepare for the long-pending Village Council elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).

Elaborating on his meeting with Shah, Saha said he had discussed a range of issues concerning the state with the central leadership, including organisational, political and administrative matters.

“There are several issues that are essential for running the state and these need to be brought to the attention of the central leadership. That is why I went to Delhi yesterday and met the Union Home Minister,” Saha said.

Describing the meeting as cordial and constructive, the Chief Minister said discussions were held on various matters in a positive atmosphere.

“Our leadership has always engaged in positive discussions,” he said.

Asked about the possibility of an alliance for the VC elections, Saha said negotiations were still underway.

“Talks on the alliance for the VC elections are in progress. I am hopeful that the outcome will be positive,” he said.

The alliance discussions are significant as the ruling BJP and its tribal ally, the Tipra Motha Party, are working towards a possible electoral understanding ahead of the polls.

The Village Council elections are expected to be closely watched, particularly across the tribal-dominated areas of Tripura, where both parties are seeking to consolidate their political influence.
