Tripura is experiencing an unusually early onset of fog this year, with visibility dropping below 50 metres in several areas since early November.
Dr. Patha Roy, Head Scientist at the Meteorological Centre, noted that the state usually enters its winter phase from December to February, with dense fog conditions typically appearing only from mid-December. Last year, such weather patterns began around December 15.
He stated that although earlier forecasts suggested normal temperatures for November, current observations show temperatures dipping to 15–16°C — still near normal but noticeably cooler than expected for this time of year.
“We had predicted a normal winter, and the downward trend in temperature indicates that winter-like conditions may be felt earlier than usual,” Dr. Roy said.
The Meteorological Centre anticipates a normal number of foggy days this winter, with dense fog events likely to become more frequent as the season advances.
Given the present conditions, dense fog is very likely during the night and early morning hours on November 25 and 26 in isolated pockets of Tripura. A yellow alert has been issued, urging travellers and residents to exercise caution.
