The Khumulwng area under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) witnessed heightened political tension on Saturday after miscreants allegedly attacked and vandalised a BJP office in broad daylight.
According to reports, a group of miscreants entered the BJP office premises at Khumulwng and allegedly went on a rampage, damaging 12 motorcycles and two cars parked inside the premises. The incident triggered tension and panic among local residents. No casualties have been reported so far.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the attackers arrived during the daytime and vandalised several vehicles before leaving the area. Following the incident, allegations were levelled against supporters of the Tipra Motha, although the exact identity of those involved and the motive behind the attack have not yet been established.
Security forces were deployed in large numbers in and around Khumulung following the incident to prevent any further escalation. Police and the administration have launched an investigation to identify those responsible for the vandalism. No arrests had been reported till the filing of this report.
The BJP office in Khumulwng has reportedly faced attacks in the past as well. The latest incident has therefore added to concerns over political tension in the area, particularly with the Village Committee elections approaching.
The incident comes amid reports of differences and political friction between the two constituents of the ruling alliance over various issues in recent times. The latest attack has once again brought the political equation between the alliance partners into focus.
However, whether the incident was directly linked to political rivalry will become clear only after the completion of the investigation.
Authorities are maintaining a strict vigil in the area and have urged people not to spread rumours or engage in activities that could disturb peace and public order.
