Tripura’s Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Friday alleged that the state government has been repeatedly extending the services of certain retired bureaucrats beyond their scheduled tenure, raising questions over transparency and accountability in administration.

Addressing a press conference at the Civil Secretariat, Chaudhury referred to reports published in Syandan Patrika and claimed that some retired officials have received multiple reappointments from the government.

Highlighting the case of former IAS officer Anindya Kumar Bhattacharya, Chaudhury alleged that he has been reappointed seven times and is currently serving as Special Secretary while handling responsibilities under the GA (General Administration) and PLT departments. He also levelled allegations of irregularities against the officer, including claims of false TA bills.

Chaudhury further alleged that during Bhattacharya’s tenure as Director of Fire Services, funds from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were used to purchase seven drones for firefighting operations. However, he claimed that the drones have neither been used in actual firefighting operations nor during any official demonstrations or drills.

The opposition leader also alleged that during his tenure, vehicle repair works were carried out at a garage in Barjala, resulting in bills worth lakhs of rupees. He questioned why the officer continues to hold important responsibilities, including a director-level position.

Chaudhury also referred to the resignation of Vigilance Department officer Jeremy Darlong, who reportedly submitted his resignation letter on July 7. He alleged that Darlong was facing pressure and humiliation while performing his duties due to the actions of the officer concerned. He claimed that humiliating a Scheduled Caste officer in such a manner could amount to a legal offence and demanded an inquiry into the matter.

The opposition leader also raised allegations against Pradip Kumar Chakraborty, Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office, claiming that he has received eight extensions or assignments after retirement. Chaudhury alleged that Chakraborty faced land-related allegations during his tenure as Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Belonia and demanded an investigation into alleged land holdings in and around Agartala.

Questioning the government’s repeated preference for retired officials, Chaudhury asked why certain retired bureaucrats continue to receive extensions and key responsibilities while other serving officers remain available in the administration.

The state government has not yet issued any official response to the allegations.
