The Tripura Pradesh Congress on Wednesday raised objections over the ongoing Special Summary Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging a lack of transparency and clear communication from the election authorities regarding the process.

Addressing the media, Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty said the voter list revision exercise was a crucial matter that required public participation and proper supervision. He urged the State Election Officer to ensure that the entire process was conducted in a fair and transparent manner.

Chakraborty stated that the Congress had earlier submitted a letter to the Election Commission of India through the state election authorities seeking clarification on various aspects of the SIR exercise. However, he claimed that the party had not received any formal response or update on the issue.

Referring to the Election Commission’s notification issued on May 14, he said the guidelines included door-to-door distribution of forms from June 30 by Booth Level Officers (BLOs), followed by verification and preparation of updated electoral rolls. He added that the exercise was aimed at ensuring accurate voter records and removing any ineligible entries.

“The electoral roll must be accurate and trustworthy in Tripura as well as across the country. Protecting the credibility of elections is essential,” Chakraborty said.

He further alleged that during a recent all-party meeting convened by the State Election Commissioner, no satisfactory explanation was provided regarding the concerns raised by the Congress. According to him, the authorities indicated that certain stages of the process would begin later, without giving detailed clarification.

Criticising the ruling BJP, Chakraborty alleged that the party was attempting to influence electoral procedures due to declining public support. He also accused election authorities of not maintaining neutrality, allegations that have been rejected by the BJP and officials.

Questioning the variation in the implementation schedule across states, Chakraborty referred to the voter revision process in Karnataka and asked why similar procedures and timelines were not being clearly followed in Tripura.

The Congress leader said the party would approach the State Election Officer again and demand answers on the concerns raised. He maintained that the voter list should remain free from errors and political interference to ensure fair and democratic elections.
