A large-scale plantation effort in Gujarat has turned previously barren land near Machhu Dam in Morbi into a green zone after the planting of around 10 lakh saplings in just 37 days.
The initiative, called ‘Namo Van’, was developed on roughly 1,200 bighas of land owned by a trust close to the dam area during 2025. The project was inaugurated last year on September 17 by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 75th birthday.
Leading the campaign, Minister of State for Labour, Skill Development and Employment Kantilal Amrutiya said the initiative reflects a long-term commitment to environmental conservation and natural farming, especially after his recovery from cancer.
He explained that the plantation drive was carefully planned with support from Sadbhavana Vruddhashram. The barren land was first levelled, enriched with fertile soil and organic manure brought from outside, and then fully fenced before planting began.
Around 500 workers participated in the effort, planting nearly 25,000–30,000 saplings daily. After 37 days of continuous work, the target of 10 lakh trees was achieved. The site now has irrigation systems and maintenance arrangements in place to support growth.
According to officials, the saplings planted over the past several months have grown significantly, gradually transforming the dry terrain into a dense green cover.
Ahead of local body elections, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also visited the site again and approved ₹3 crore for constructing a road to improve access for visitors.
Amrutiya added that he plans to expand similar plantation efforts in the region by requesting additional government land near the Machhu Dam for future green initiatives, saying his personal health struggles have strengthened his dedication to environmental work.
