Right wing bodies demand ban on cow slaughter on Bakri Eid in Tripura

Ahead of Bakri Eid, the Sanatani Hindu Sena and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) have stepped up their demand for a total ban on cow slaughter across Tripura.

On Thursday, members of the Sanatani Hindu Sena submitted deputations to all District Magistrates in the state, seeking strict implementation of existing laws aimed at cow protection.

Speaking to reporters, Khokan Biswas, assistant joint secretary of the Sena, said, “Today our members visited all District Magistrates across Tripura to submit our appeal. In Sanatan Dharma, the cow is revered as a mother and sacred being. With Bakri Eid approaching on June 7, we are demanding a complete ban on cow slaughter. Cow milk is used in religious rituals, and it is our sacred duty to protect Gaumata.”

Meanwhile, the VHP also submitted a memorandum to West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar, raising concern over alleged plans for cow slaughter at multiple sites in the district during the festival.

The memorandum invoked legal provisions under Sections 428 and 429 of the Indian Penal Code, Section 11(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and cited the Supreme Court’s 1995 judgment in State of West Bengal & Ors. vs Ashutosh Lahiri & Ors. (AIR 1995 SC 464).

“We appeal to the administration to take immediate steps and issue strict directives to prevent cow slaughter not only during Bakri Eid but on a long-term basis,” the VHP stated.
