Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Sunday visited several flood-affected areas and relief camps in the city and assured that the state government would take long-term measures to address the recurring flood problem in Tripura.
During his visit to flood-hit areas and relief camps at Vivekananda School, Bardowali, and Ashram Chowmuhani, the Chief Minister interacted with affected residents and reviewed the relief and rescue operations.
Dr Saha said sudden heavy rainfall had resulted in water entering several areas of Khowai and West Tripura district. He noted that heavy rainfall in the Barmura Hills had also contributed to the situation in parts of West District, similar to the flooding witnessed in August 2024.
According to the Chief Minister, the water level of the Haora River had crossed the danger mark but was gradually receding, while rainfall had also eased. He said officials from the district administration to the state government were closely monitoring the situation and working continuously to assist affected people.
Dr Saha said relief camps had been opened in affected areas, with arrangements made for food, including baby food. Disaster response teams and boats had been deployed for rescue and relief operations.
“Seventeen relief camps have been opened, where 413 families comprising 1,305 people are currently staying,” the Chief Minister said.
He further said the government was exploring permanent measures to reduce the impact of recurring floods. While embankments had already been constructed at several locations, additional steps were being considered to strengthen flood management.
“We cannot compete with nature, but we can remain prepared and take preventive measures,” Dr Saha said, adding that the government was on alert and NDRF teams had been kept in reserve.
He also praised the district administration, councillors, party workers and other personnel for working round the clock in the affected areas.
West District has been among the worst affected by the sudden rise in water levels, he said.
Secretary Milind Ramteke, West District Magistrate Dr Vishal Kumar and other officials accompanied the Chief Minister during the visit.
