Tripura Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Sunday accused the BJP-led government of failing to deliver on its promises and alleged that the administration has created an increasingly “undemocratic environment” in the state.

Chaudhury made the remarks while addressing a street-corner programme organised by a Left-backed employees’ organisation in Agartala ahead of the Assembly session beginning August 27.

The programme highlighted the demands of government employees, particularly the payment of pending allowances and 19 per cent Dearness Allowance (DA), which the protesters claimed is due under the Seventh Pay Commission. They also called for the formation of an Eighth Pay Commission for Tripura.

Taking aim at the ruling alliance of the BJP, Tipra Motha and IPFT, Chaudhury alleged that the government becomes active in making promises to employees, teachers and unemployed youths only when elections approach.

He claimed that the BJP had promised between four and five lakh jobs ahead of the 2018 Assembly elections but alleged that the employment situation for young people remains a major concern.

According to the LoP, the government has completed several years in office but has not adequately addressed unemployment or the economic difficulties faced by ordinary people. He also alleged that people living in rural and hilly areas continue to face serious economic challenges.

Chaudhury further criticised the recent increase in electricity tariffs and other charges, claiming that widespread public opposition forced the government to announce a 100 per cent subsidy.

He argued that such concessions could not substitute for a broader policy response to people’s grievances.

“The government cannot address every democratic protest simply by announcing temporary relief. Employees and ordinary people have genuine demands that require a permanent solution,” Chaudhury said.
