Continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days has severely affected normal life in Teliamura subdivision. Amid the adverse weather conditions, a tragic incident occurred late Saturday night at the Hawai Bari Thangnai Bazar area, where a huge banyan tree was uprooted during a powerful storm and fell onto two adjacent residential houses.

The impact of the incident caused parts of both houses to collapse, leaving several family members trapped and injured. Panic spread across the area following the incident, as local residents rushed to the spot and rescued the injured people. They were later shifted to Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital for medical treatment.

After being informed, members of the Sub-Divisional Disaster Management team reached the site and launched a rescue operation. The team worked for a long time to cut and remove the fallen tree and bring the situation under control.

On Sunday morning, the MLA of Teliamura Assembly constituency, along with senior officials of the administration, visited the affected area. They met the victims’ families, took stock of the situation, and assured them of all possible assistance from the government, including financial support as per official norms, medical aid for the injured, and necessary help for repairing or rebuilding the damaged houses.

Meanwhile, the incident has triggered resentment among local residents. They alleged that several old and dangerous trees in the area, along with safety concerns related to electricity lines, had been brought to the attention of the concerned departments for a long time, but no effective action was taken.

Residents claimed that timely intervention could have prevented the accident. However, no official statement has so far been issued by the concerned department regarding allegations of negligence against an official of the electricity department.
