The Tripura Police have launched an investigation into the death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, while authorities await the post-mortem report to ascertain further details, DGP-in-Charge G.S. Rao said on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after paying his last respects to the late police chief at the Police Headquarters, Rao said that no dedicated investigation panel has been constituted yet. He, however, stated that the matter is under review and an inquiry panel will be formed to ensure a comprehensive investigation and close monitoring of the case.

Describing the incident as "extremely unfortunate," Rao said the sudden demise of the state's top police officer has left the entire police fraternity in deep shock.

He said officers and personnel bid a final farewell to Dhankar at the Police Headquarters before his mortal remains were taken to the State Secretariat, where Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu and other dignitaries paid their respects. The body was later transported to the airport for its onward journey to his native place in Uttar Pradesh.

Rao also said a three-member police team comprising IG (Law & Order) M. Ipper, Traffic SP Kanta Jangir and the Commandant of the 2nd Battalion of the Tripura State Rifles accompanied the mortal remains to Uttar Pradesh. The last rites of the late DGP are scheduled to be performed there on Wednesday.
