The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday filed a chargesheet against 11 accused in a terror conspiracy case linked to an offshoot of the banned Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), alleging a coordinated effort to expand the group's extremist network across West Bengal and the northeastern states.
The chargesheet was submitted before the NIA Special Court in Guwahati under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
According to the NIA, its investigation found that the accused were actively involved in the activities of Imam Mahmuder Kafila (IMK), an offshoot established by senior JMB member Imam Mahmud Habibullah to further the banned outfit's agenda in India.
The agency alleged that the conspiracy aimed to spread JMB's extremist ideology in West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and other northeastern states through radicalisation of vulnerable youth, expansion of the organisation's network, and promotion of anti-India propaganda.
Investigators said the accused organised clandestine meetings, conducted religious indoctrination programmes, circulated extremist literature and used digital platforms to recruit supporters and promote allegiance to the IMK/JMB leadership.
Among those chargesheeted, Nasimuddin has been identified as the alleged head of IMK's activities in Assam, while Jagir Mia is accused of leading the outfit's operations in Tripura.
During the investigation, the NIA seized incriminating documents, electronic devices and digital records, which it said formed crucial evidence in establishing the alleged conspiracy.
The case is part of the NIA's ongoing efforts to dismantle terror networks and prevent the spread of extremist organisations operating in India.
