Severe storms accompanied by heavy rainfall over the past two days have caused widespread disruption across Tripura, significantly damaging the state’s electricity distribution system and affecting normal life in several districts.

A preliminary assessment by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) reveals extensive infrastructure damage across eight districts. In total, 1,665 electricity poles have collapsed, 745.99 km of conductors have been damaged, and 103 distribution transformers have been affected. The estimated financial loss so far stands at approximately Rs 5.59 crore.

South Tripura Worst Hit

South Tripura has emerged as the most severely affected district, reporting 494 damaged poles, 96 km of electrical lines, and 12 transformers impacted. Key areas such as Belonia, Santirbazar, and Sabroom are experiencing major and prolonged power outages.

Widespread District-Wise Impact

  • Sepahijala: 268 poles, 61.73 km of conductors, and 15 transformers damaged
  • Khowai: 205 poles affected
  • Gomati: 129 poles damaged, along with the highest transformer loss at 19 units
  • North Tripura: 173 poles damaged
  • Unakoti: 51 poles affected
  • Dhalai: 85 poles damaged
  • West Tripura (including Agartala): 260 poles and 183.9 km of conductors damaged, leading to major disruptions in urban and semi-urban areas

Restoration Efforts on War Footing

Despite the extensive damage, restoration work is being carried out on a war footing. Field teams comprising linemen and technical staff are working round the clock to replace damaged poles, clear fallen trees, and repair disrupted lines—often under challenging and hazardous conditions. In several locations, repair work has continued uninterrupted for over 24 hours.

TSECL Managing Director Biswajit Basu stated that the challenge extends beyond technical repairs, emphasizing the urgency of restoring normal daily life for citizens. He noted that difficult terrain, waterlogging, and remote locations are slowing access in some areas, but restoration efforts remain continuous and focused.

Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath has been closely monitoring the situation, reviewing district-wise damage reports and directing officials to accelerate recovery operations. He reiterated that restoring electricity across the state remains the government’s top priority and assured full administrative support for the restoration process.

Breakdown of Estimated Loss

  • Conductors: Rs 3.73 crore
  • Poles: Rs 83.25 lakh
  • Transformers: Rs 1.3 crore

Authorities continue to work intensively to restore power supply across all affected regions, aiming to bring relief to residents still facing outages in the aftermath of the storm.
