Tripura Police on Tuesday arrested two brothers in connection with the alleged murder of a local club secretary in the Kathaltali area of West Tripura district, an incident that sparked tension and unrest in the locality.
The victim, identified as Samir Das, secretary of Tarun Sangha Club, was reportedly attacked and hacked to death in the early hours of Tuesday. Police have arrested the two accused brothers, Swapan Sutradhar and Mithun Sutradhar, both residents of the same area.
According to police officials, the crime is suspected to have originated from a long-standing personal rivalry between the victim and the accused. However, investigators are still examining the circumstances surrounding the murder to determine the exact motive.
The killing triggered anger among local residents, with some people allegedly attacking the houses of the accused soon after the incident. In response, authorities deployed a large number of police personnel, along with Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel, to prevent further disturbances and maintain law and order.
Senior police officers, including West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak, Additional SPs Dhruba Nath and Himadri Prasad Das, Amtali SDPO Parmita Pandey, and Amtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Prantosh Das, visited the area to assess the situation and oversee security arrangements.
Speaking to reporters, SP Namit Pathak said the incident occurred around 2:30 am and confirmed that both accused had been taken into custody.
“Two individuals have been named in the case, and both have been arrested. The investigation is underway, and evidence is being collected,” he said.
Police officials stated that security has been strengthened in and around Kathaltali and that the situation remains under control.
