President Droupadi Murmu on Monday remembered Swami Vivekananda on his birth anniversary, observed as National Youth Day, saying that his ideas and ideals continue to guide and inspire people across the globe.
January 12 was declared National Youth Day in 1984 with the objective of encouraging young people to draw inspiration from Swami Vivekananda’s life and teachings, while actively participating in the nation’s progress.
Paying tribute on social media platform X, President Murmu described Swami Vivekananda as a visionary thinker and spiritual leader who emphasized inner strength and selfless service as the pillars of a purposeful life.
She said that Swamiji carried the profound and enduring wisdom of India to the international stage, awakening a sense of pride and confidence among Indians. His message, especially to the youth, encouraged dedication toward nation-building and service to humanity, she added, noting that his teachings remain relevant even today.
Born on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata, Swami Vivekananda played a key role in introducing Indian spiritual traditions such as Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. His historic address at the 1893 World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago is regarded as a landmark moment that promoted interfaith harmony and renewed global interest in Hindu philosophy.
A strong advocate of nationalism, social reform, and unity, he inspired young minds to work for the welfare of society and founded the Ramakrishna Mission to advance education and humanitarian service.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid homage to Swami Vivekananda, stating that National Youth Day serves as a source of renewed energy and confidence for the younger generation. He highlighted that Swamiji’s life and legacy continue to strengthen India’s resolve toward becoming a developed nation and empower youth with purpose and self-belief.
