The Tripura government has set an ambitious goal of increasing the state's higher education enrolment rate from the present 22 percent to 75 percent by 2030, Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman announced on Thursday.

Speaking at the Higher Education Dialogue review meeting held at the administrative building of Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) University, the minister said expanding access to quality higher education is crucial for preparing the state's youth to contribute to India's growth and development.

Barman stated that achieving the target would require significant improvements in academic infrastructure, a student-friendly learning environment, and stronger collaboration among teachers, students, college authorities, and the government.

"Education reforms cannot be driven by the government alone. The active participation of educators, administrators and students is essential for creating a dynamic and effective higher education system," he said.

The meeting focused on reviewing infrastructure in colleges, identifying operational challenges, and discussing measures to improve institutional coordination. The minister announced that MBB University, MBB College, BBMC College and the Government Law College would be developed as an integrated educational hub and transformed into model institutions by 2030.

Highlighting the importance of student participation, Barman said policy decisions should reflect the needs and opinions of students who regularly attend classes and make effective use of campus facilities such as libraries, laboratories and canteens.

To ensure faster resolution of local issues, the Higher Education Department will organise similar review meetings across all districts. The minister also advised college administrations to resolve routine matters at the institutional level instead of forwarding every issue to the department.

On the expansion of higher education, Barman said the proposed Tripura Technical University and Women's University, which have already received approval from the State Assembly and the Governor, are expected to begin academic activities soon after the admission process starts. He added that the decision on establishing a Medical University would be taken by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha.

The meeting was attended by Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder and senior officials of the Higher Education Department.

Concluding the discussion, the minister said the state's vision for 2030 extends beyond increasing enrolment. "Our objective is to build an inclusive, modern and vibrant higher education ecosystem that empowers students with confidence, skills and opportunities to emerge as future leaders," he said.
