The Sixth State Finance Commission (SFC) has submitted its report to Tripura Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha, proposing a roadmap to strengthen fiscal decentralisation and improve the functioning of local self-government institutions across the state for the next five years.

The report was presented on Friday by Commission Chairman Abhishek Singh, IAS, in the presence of Member Dr. Pallab Kanti Ghosal and Member Secretary Dr. Akinchan Sarkar, IAS.

Constituted on January 7, 2025, under Articles 243(I) and 243(Y) of the Constitution of India, the Commission was entrusted with assessing the financial status of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). It was also mandated to recommend a framework for the equitable distribution of State resources among these institutions and suggest measures to enhance their financial sustainability, governance and administrative efficiency.

Commending the Commission's work, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said the report reflects extensive consultations with government departments, elected representatives, local self-government institutions and subject experts. He said the State Government would carefully examine the recommendations and take appropriate decisions to further strengthen grassroots governance and ensure balanced development throughout Tripura.

Chairman Abhishek Singh thanked the Rural Development (Panchayat) Department, Urban Development Department, Finance Department, public representatives and other stakeholders for their support and valuable inputs during the Commission's deliberations.

Sources said the report will now be placed before the Council of Ministers for consideration. Following Cabinet approval, the recommendations are expected to be implemented by the concerned departments during the period from 2026-27 to 2030-31.

Officials expressed confidence that the Commission's recommendations would provide a strong foundation for fiscal decentralisation, empower local self-government institutions and accelerate inclusive and sustainable development across Tripura.
