Tripura Tribal Welfare Minister Bikas Debbarma has appealed to the Central Government for enhanced support to improve educational and welfare facilities for tribal communities in the state. During a meeting with Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Jual Oram, Debbarma submitted a detailed memorandum outlining several proposals aimed at upgrading tribal education and infrastructure.
Among the major proposals is the establishment of separate 100-bed hostels for tribal boys and girls from Tripura in the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR). The hostels are intended to provide safe and affordable accommodation for Scheduled Tribe (ST) students pursuing higher education in the national capital. Debbarma stated that Union Minister Jual Oram has extended in-principle approval for the initiative, paving the way for its future implementation.
The memorandum also emphasizes the need to modernize government-managed ST hostels, hostels operated by the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), and residential schools across the state. It proposes improved infrastructure, better living conditions, and enhanced educational facilities for tribal students.
In addition, the minister sought financial assistance from the Centre for installing solar-powered lighting systems, safe drinking water facilities, and water purification units in tribal institutions. To encourage sports and overall youth development, the proposal includes the construction of synthetic football grounds, establishment of sports schools, and setting up new Ashram schools in tribal-dominated regions.
Debbarma said these initiatives would significantly improve educational access, promote sports, encourage renewable energy use, and enhance the overall quality of life for tribal communities. He reiterated his commitment to securing better opportunities for tribal students and ensuring inclusive development across Tripura.
