A 45-year-old woman lost her life and a 10-year-old girl was injured after a WagonR car allegedly went out of control and hit them near Kalachhara Railway Station in South Tripura district on Sunday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Sabita Das, a resident of Kalachhara. According to local sources, she had stepped out for her usual morning walk and was accompanied by her neighbour's daughter, Sangita Roy, when the accident occurred.
The car, which was travelling from Agartala towards Sabroom, allegedly first struck the two pedestrians before crashing into a roadside restaurant and finally ramming into the house of a local resident, Amulya Das.
Residents immediately rushed to the scene and rescued the victims. They were taken to the Kalachhara Primary Health Centre, from where Sabita Das was referred to Santirbazar District Hospital after her condition turned critical. Doctors later declared her dead. Sangita Roy is undergoing treatment and is reported to be receiving medical care.
The incident triggered tension in the locality after residents alleged that the vehicle was being driven by an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) posted at Santirbazar Police Station.
Police have initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the crash and to verify the allegations regarding the identity of the driver. Officials said further details would emerge once the investigation is completed.
