Agartala likely to introduce dedicated bicycle lanes

In a significant push toward sustainable urban mobility, Agartala is gearing up to introduce dedicated bicycle lanes, announced Dr. Shailesh Yadav, CEO of Agartala Smart City Mission, on the occasion of the 7th World Bicycle Day.

Addressing a vibrant bicycle rally in the city, Dr. Yadav emphasized the multi-dimensional benefits of cycling—from personal well-being to environmental sustainability and social inclusivity.

“World Bicycle Day is a reminder that cycling is a great equalizer. It’s good for your health, good for the environment, and good for everyone,” Dr. Yadav said. “We should all pledge to reclaim road space—not just for vehicles but for cyclists and pedestrians.”

Despite the challenge of Agartala’s narrow roads, the Smart City Mission is determined to carve out dedicated cycling lanes wherever feasible. “Under the Agartala Smart City Limited project, we are revamping the city's infrastructure, including roads. Even in areas with limited width, we are identifying and allocating space for bicycles,” he added.

The rally, organized by Track and Trail Agartala in collaboration with Agartala Cycle Holic, brought together 42 passionate cyclists—including women, students, professionals, and fitness enthusiasts—for a 10–15 km ride across the city.

The event reflected this year’s United Nations theme: “Promoting Health, Equity, and Sustainability through Cycling.” The local campaign was aptly titled “Agartala Cycloholics on Pedals.”

Dr. Yadav and Dr. Bharati Nigam, Assistant Director of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), jointly flagged off the rally and actively participated in the ride—underscoring their commitment to promoting cycling as a viable mode of urban transport.

Adding an interactive dimension to the celebration, Gopesh Debnath, the Bicycle Mayor of Agartala, led a dynamic Q&A session focusing on the role of cycling in city planning and sustainable development. Trophies were awarded to standout participants, lending a festive atmosphere to the initiative and reaffirming the city’s growing enthusiasm for pedal-powered progress.

As Agartala charts its path toward a greener, more inclusive future, cycling is fast emerging as both a symbol and a solution.
