Former Tripura Chief Minister and West Tripura Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her government of failing to ensure the safety of women in the state.
Deb arrived in Kolkata earlier today as a member of the BJP's fact-finding committee, constituted to probe the alleged gang-rape incident at Kolkata’s Law College. The four-member committee, formed under the directive of BJP national president J.P. Nadda, includes former Union Ministers Satyapal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, as well as Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra.
Speaking to reporters at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Deb expressed grave concern over the state of women's safety in Bengal.
“Fifty percent of the population are women. If even in a Law College — where students are meant to become protectors of justice — women are not safe, it is a matter of deep concern. The Chief Minister herself is a woman, and yet such horrific incidents are taking place under her watch. I strongly condemn this,” Deb said.
He further stated that the committee will soon visit the crime scene, interact with the victim, and submit a comprehensive report to BJP president J.P. Nadda.
“The accused has a criminal background dating back to 2013. His connections with Trinamool Congress leaders are evident from photographs in the public domain. It is clear that individuals involved in this heinous crime are closely associated with TMC,” Deb alleged.
Declaring that the BJP will not remain silent, he said, “We will fight to ensure women are protected in West Bengal. Let everyone see the truth for themselves.”
The committee's visit comes amid mounting outrage over the incident, which has once again ignited debate over law and order and women's safety in the state.
