Alleging a complete breakdown of law and order in Tripura, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President Asish Kumar Saha on Monday met Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar and demanded urgent measures to curb political violence and ensure public safety.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Saha warned that the Congress would be compelled to launch a statewide mass movement if the police fail to act decisively.
"A delegation of the Tripura Pradesh Congress called on the DGP today to highlight the alarming deterioration of law and order in the state. There has been a consistent pattern of attacks on opposition parties, murders, and open acts of violence," Saha stated.
He accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of supporting miscreants who, he claimed, have been targeting opposition leaders with impunity.
“These attacks are often carried out in the presence of police personnel, who remain passive and fail to intervene,” he said.
Saha alleged that opposition party offices are being vandalized, motorbikes set on fire, and political meetings sabotaged — all in broad daylight. "These are not isolated incidents. They are happening daily, across the state, while the police act as silent spectators," he added.
The PCC chief also raised concerns over a recent murder in Surma under Dhalai district, where a local resident, Asish Das, was allegedly killed in a premeditated attack. "The victim’s family has pointed fingers at leaders from the ruling party. I have demanded the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by a senior IPS officer to ensure a fair probe," he said.
Reiterating his party’s demand, Saha urged the police to take immediate and concrete action to restore peace and ensure accountability.
“If the police administration continues to remain inactive, we will be left with no choice but to hit the streets in protest,” he concluded.
