In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Tripura Police arrested seven individuals late Saturday night and seized 20 kilograms of cannabis from Kalyanpur in Khowai district. Among those arrested, six are residents of Bihar, while one hails from Tripura.
According to Officer-in-Charge of Kalyanpur Police Station, Tapas Malakar, the arrests were made during a routine late-night vehicle checking operation. Police intercepted an Eco car carrying six individuals—three men and three women—all from Bihar.
"Acting on suspicion, we conducted a detailed search of the vehicle and recovered 20 kg of cannabis. All passengers, along with the driver, were taken into custody immediately," Malakar said.
Preliminary interrogation revealed that the accused were allegedly transporting the narcotics consignment to Bihar in exchange for money.
The arrested individuals from Bihar have been identified as Sambhu Kumar, Mantu Mandal, Abdes Kumar Mandal, Anjali Mandal, Sangita Kumari, and Lalita Devi. The driver, Gautam Debbarma, is a resident of Lefunga village in West Tripura district.
A case has been registered under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Police said further investigation is ongoing to trace the supply chain and other individuals involved.
