In a major crackdown on criminal activities, the Government Railway Police (GRP), in coordination with the Agartala Railway Protection Force (RPF), arrested a female drug peddler and a human trafficker in two separate late-night operations on Monday.
According to GRP Officer-in-Charge Tapas Das, a woman identified as Juma Debbarma (26), a resident of Bishrampara, Tisama under Taidu in Gomati district, was detained at Agartala Railway Station for carrying 21.605 kg of dry ganja. The contraband was concealed in five packets inside a trolley bag.
During preliminary interrogation, the accused reportedly admitted that she was transporting the ganja to Karimganj in Assam, from where it was to be further trafficked to Punjab. A case has been registered against her under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Agartala GRP Police Station.
Police sources estimate that the seized ganja, which fetches around Rs 35,000 per kilogram in Punjab, has a street value of approximately Rs 7.5 lakh.
In a separate operation, the GRP, in collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF) and Bamutia Outpost Police, arrested a suspected human trafficker identified as Kamal Das (43), a resident of Bugjur village under Lefunga Police Station in West Tripura district.
He is accused of involvement in an ongoing human trafficking case. A special police team is currently interrogating him, and officials suspect more individuals from the region may be linked to the racket.
Both the accused will be produced before the court today, with the police seeking remand for further investigation.
