In a significant boost to the state’s healthcare infrastructure, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Sunday announced that the Tripura government has initiated the process to recruit 432 nursing personnel.
Speaking at an event marking International Nurses Day at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan, Dr. Saha said the state will soon appoint 332 permanent nursing staff. In addition, financial clearance has been received from the Finance Department to engage another 100 nurses on a contractual basis.
Highlighting the importance of the nursing profession, the Chief Minister—who also holds the Health portfolio—said, “Nursing is a noble and essential profession. Nurses work tirelessly for the people. They are the frontline caregivers—checking vitals, administering medicines and injections, and providing care even before the doctors arrive. They are the trust of the dying.”
Dr. Saha informed that 153 nursing staff have already been recruited in 2024, and the government is continuously assessing patient-to-nurse ratios to optimize deployment across the state.
He also emphasized the need to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of nurses, in line with this year’s International Nurses Day theme, which focuses on making the profession more attractive and economically significant. “Better nursing care not only improves patient outcomes but also contributes to a stronger economy,” he added.
The Chief Minister noted that many youth from Tripura are now pursuing nursing careers abroad, reflecting the growing demand and respect for the profession. “Those in nursing have the privilege of serving humanity. Recognition and respect are earned through relentless dedication,” he said.
Dr. Saha further announced key developments in nursing education in the state. “In 2023–24, the Nursing Training Institute has been upgraded to the Agartala Government Nursing College. Now, BSc Nursing, BDS, and MBBS courses are available in Tripura. Also, the 40-seat ANM Nursing Institute in Udaipur has been upgraded to GNM,” he said.
