Heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds wreaked havoc across Tripura between May 11 and 12, damaging 1,835 houses and displacing nearly 1,000 people.
A report from the State Emergency Operation Centre stated that among the eight districts of Tripura, West Tripura District was the worst affected.
The report highlighted that in the Mohanpur Sub-division of West District, due to heavy rain and thunderstorms, 51 houses were fully damaged, 614 houses were severely damaged, and 1,145 houses were partly damaged.
The district administration has also opened four relief camps, including Akhilacherra English Medium HS School, where 455 persons from 153 families have taken shelter; Sankhala SB School, where 175 persons from 68 families have taken shelter; Chandicherra SB School, where 150 persons from 49 families have taken shelter; and Gayamani English Medium JB School, where 211 persons from 65 families have taken shelter.
In the Jirania Sub-division of West District, four houses were partly damaged; in Sepahijala District, two houses were severely damaged and two houses were partly damaged.
In North Tripura's Dharmanagar Sub-division, a major road was blocked by a fallen tree, which was later cleared by Aapda Mitra and Civil Defence volunteers. In Gomati district, five electric poles were damaged.
The Meteorological Centre in Agartala has issued an Orange Warning for the state, forecasting continued heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next four days.
