Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha today inaugurated the week-long traditional Kharchi Puja, fair, and exhibition at the historic Chaturdasa Devata Temple in Old Agartala, highlighting the state government’s commitment to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the indigenous Janajati communities.
Addressing a large gathering at the inaugural ceremony, Dr. Saha said the government is actively working to revive the vanishing tribal art forms and is developing the Chaturdasa Devata temple as a hub for religious tourism.
"We eagerly await the Kharchi Puja each year, held on the Shukla Ashtami of the month of Ashadh. Devotees from across Tripura, other parts of India, and even neighbouring Bangladesh come to be part of this sacred celebration," said the Chief Minister.
Describing Kharchi Puja as a once-royal ritual that has evolved into a symbol of unity among all communities, Dr. Saha reminisced about the festival’s origins when there were no roads or bridges and people had to cross the Howrah River by boat to reach the temple.
“Today, Kharchi Puja is no longer confined to any specific caste or religion. It has become a universal celebration of faith and fraternity,” he added.
Dr. Saha noted that the Kharchi Mela draws nearly 10 to 15 lakh people over the course of seven days, creating a vibrant platform for cultural exchange and economic upliftment. He said the fair not only strengthens social harmony but also boosts local businesses, especially those linked to cottage and traditional industries.
He further emphasized that Tripura is a land of diverse cultures and languages, where such festivals nurture mutual understanding and brotherhood.
In a major cultural initiative, the Chief Minister announced that ₹3 crore has been earmarked in this year’s state budget for the revival and preservation of traditional tribal musical instruments, marking a significant step toward safeguarding the indigenous heritage.
Highlighting national recognition, Dr. Saha proudly mentioned that Tripura’s tableau, themed on Kharchi Puja and showcased during the Republic Day parade in New Delhi, had secured second place at the national level.
“Kharchi Puja is a source of energy, peace, and prosperity. Participating in it brings spiritual well-being and contributes to the overall progress of society,” the Chief Minister concluded.
The Kharchi festival, which began today, will continue till July 9, drawing devotees, tourists, artisans, and traders from far and wide.
