Leader of Opposition and CPI (M) Jitendra Chaudhury on Monday launched a scathing attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura, alleging that an "undemocratic and abnormal" situation is prevailing in the state, where democracy is being systematically dismantled.
Speaking to media, Chaudhury who is also Politburo member accused the BJP of curbing democratic rights—both of the public and within its own party ranks.
“Democracy is being slaughtered in Tripura day by day. The BJP is killing democracy with its own hands,” he said.
He alleged that the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated to its lowest point, yet Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha has remained indifferent.
“The government is not taking any concrete steps to restore normalcy. Rather, it appears the BJP is trying to capitalise on terrorism and unrest to hold on to power,” he claimed.
The senior CPI(M) leader further said that a large section of the state's population—including many who had once supported the BJP—are now dissatisfied with the present state of affairs.
“This is not just the voice of the opposition but the collective sentiment of the people of Tripura. Law and order is in shambles, and democratic space is shrinking rapidly,” Chaudhury added.
The remarks come amid growing political tension in the state, with opposition parties repeatedly accusing the ruling BJP of authoritarian tendencies and suppression of dissent.
