Tripura Opposition hits out at Govt for waterlogging woes in Agartala

Opposition leader Jitendra Chowdhury on Sunday has strongly criticized the state government for the recent flooding and waterlogging in Agartala city following heavy rains over the past two days.

Addressing the situation, Chowdhury remarked that the extensive submergence of roads across the city has exposed the failure of the government’s promises.

“All the lanterns of the triple engine have burst,” he said, referring to the ruling coalition’s leadership.

He recalled government assurances given in 2018 that waterlogging would be eliminated from 2025 onwards, making Agartala a “super smart city.” However, Chowdhury lamented that the reality has been quite the opposite.

He accused the government of focusing on superficial displays, such as installing flashy red and blue lights, rather than addressing core infrastructure problems that were neglected even during the previous Left Front administration.

“Despite the hype, the government has failed to deliver on essential works,” he said.

Chowdhury expressed serious concern over the looming monsoon season, questioning the government's preparedness.

“If the city is struggling to manage waterlogging during the pre-monsoon rains, what will happen when the full monsoon hits?” he asked. He also highlighted the impracticality of completing ongoing drainage and road improvement projects by the Agartala Municipal Corporation before the rains intensify.

On the issue of environmental management, the opposition leader accused ministers of making empty promises regarding a plastic-free state. “Despite years of speeches, no concrete action has been taken,” he said.

Chowdhury further alleged that corruption persists under the guise of construction works such as covered drains throughout the state, including Agartala.

He demanded that the government ensure all water drainage pumps are functional ahead of the monsoon and called for urgent cleaning of garbage from open and covered drains to reduce public suffering.
