In a significant gesture of compassion and timely intervention, Member of Parliament and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has facilitated financial assistance of Rs 3,00,000 from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for a cancer patient from South Tripura.
The beneficiary, Mani Dey (33), daughter of Amar Dey and a resident of Santirbazar in South Tripura district, was diagnosed with cancer and prescribed chemotherapy and supportive care at Mumbai's renowned Tata Memorial Hospital.
Her treatment was estimated to cost Rs 6,00,000—an amount well beyond the reach of her family.
Understanding the criticality of the situation, Biplab Kumar Deb wrote to the Prime Minister on April 28, 2025, enclosing the patient's medical records and formally requesting financial aid from the PMNRF. In his letter, he underscored the urgency of the case and appealed for the highest possible support to save a young life.
Responding to the appeal, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) sanctioned ₹3,00,000 on May 23, 2025.
The amount was directly transferred to Tata Memorial Hospital via NEFT/RTGS through IDFC Bank, New Delhi, to ensure uninterrupted initiation of treatment.
“The sanctioned grant shall be used for the admissible treatment costs, and the hospital is required to initiate the treatment within three months from the date of release,” the official PMO letter noted.
The communication was signed by Pradeep Kumar Srivastava, Under Secretary (Funds), and also specified that the aid is valid for up to two years. It further instructed adherence to the Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994, if relevant.
This financial support comes as a crucial lifeline for Mani Dey and her family, battling both emotional and economic distress amidst her medical crisis.
