Tripura outshines national average in reducing school dropout rates

Tripura has recorded significant success in curbing student dropout rates across primary, upper primary, and secondary levels, surpassing the national average in all key indicators, according to recent data released by the Department of School Education.

At the primary level, the dropout rate in Tripura declined from 1.4% in 2022–23 to just 0.5% in 2023–24, compared to the national average of 1.9% during the same period.

The trend continued at the upper primary level, where the state registered a decline from 5.9% to 4.1%, outperforming the national average of 5.2%.

The most striking improvement was observed at the secondary level. The dropout rate plummeted from 17.9% in 2022–23 to 10.4% in 2023–24, significantly lower than the national average of 14.1%.

“These figures underscore the state’s sustained efforts to promote inclusive and quality education,” said a senior official from the Tripura government. The official attributed the success to targeted initiatives such as robust student tracking systems, increased community engagement, enhancements to the mid-day meal scheme, and upgrades in school infrastructure.

“Tripura’s commitment to equitable access to education is delivering tangible results. We are determined to sustain this progress to ensure no child is left behind,” the official added.

Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, who also holds the education portfolio, has been at the forefront of the state's education reforms, actively overseeing policy implementation and development initiatives in the sector.
