Tripura to sign MoU with AIIMS to upgrade GB Pant hospital, officials visit hospital

In a landmark move aimed at revolutionizing healthcare and medical education in Tripura, the state government is poised to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.

The collaboration will focus on strengthening the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GB Pant Hospital — two of the state’s premier medical institutions.

A high-level four-member delegation from AIIMS, led by its Director Dr. Sriniwas, visited GB Pant Hospital on Saturday and held an extensive meeting with Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha.

The visit was part of an initiative to assess the current infrastructure and explore avenues for comprehensive upgrades.

Speaking to the media, Tripura Health Secretary Kiran Gitte said, “This collaboration aims to boost public healthcare services and enhance medical education at AGMC and GB Pant Hospital, which collectively serve nearly 40 lakh people in the state. Following the Chief Minister’s invitation, the AIIMS team arrived in Agartala and engaged in detailed discussions today.”

He added that this initiative falls under a central government directive that encourages AIIMS to support the development of state-run medical colleges and hospitals across the country.

“The AIIMS team will offer technical guidance on a broad range of areas — from increasing the number of doctors and expanding undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats to upgrading medical equipment, introducing super-specialty services, and modernizing diagnostic and hospital management systems,” Gitte said.

During the meeting, various key issues were discussed, including the current condition of the institutions, infrastructure gaps, developmental progress over the past two decades, and the expectations of the general public.

The AIIMS delegation will continue its visit over the next couple of days, touring different departments and engaging with medical professionals to gain an in-depth understanding of the hospital’s requirements. Their findings and recommendations will form the foundation of the MoU.

Once the MoU is finalized, the implementation of the collaborative roadmap is expected to begin within the next six months.

Welcoming the development, Gitte expressed confidence that the partnership would usher in a new era of medical excellence in Tripura. “This initiative is ultimately for the people. We believe it will significantly raise the standards of healthcare delivery in the state,” he said.
