Under trial prisoner dies en route to hospital; family alleges custodial torture

A 60-year-old Under trial prisoner, identified as Kailash Roy, died on Sunday afternoon while being taken from the Central Correctional Institution to the Bishalgarh Sub-division Hospital.

The incident has sparked serious allegations from the deceased's family, who claim he was subjected to torture in custody.

Kailash Roy, a resident of Khejur Bagan under the NCC police station in Agartala, had recently been sent to the Central Correctional Institution following his arrest in connection with a brawl during a funeral.

Sources said his health deteriorated suddenly in jail, prompting authorities to shift him to the hospital. However, he reportedly passed away on the way.

The family of the deceased has refused to accept the body, alleging that Roy was tortured inside the correctional facility which led to his untimely death. They demanded that his body be returned to them in the same condition as when he was taken into custody.

After waiting for hours at the Bishalgarh Hospital, with no resolution from the grieving family, Bishalgarh Police finally moved the body to the morgue at GBP Hospital in Agartala for post-mortem examination.

While no official statement has been released by the prison authorities so far, the incident has raised serious concerns about inmate safety and alleged custodial violence. The family has called for a thorough investigation and justice for Kailash Roy.
