The recovery of a man's body from the Barkhola area under Bijoynagar in Sabroom subdivision today morning sparked concern among local residents.
The deceased was identified as Tapan Majumdar (57). According to family members, he had left home on Saturday and did not return that night. Since he was known to occasionally stay away from home overnight, his absence did not initially cause alarm.
Residents of the area claimed that Majumdar had been battling substance addiction for a considerable period.
The incident came to light when locals discovered him lying motionless in a field on Sunday morning. Family members were immediately informed and rushed to the spot. Police were subsequently alerted and arrived at the scene to recover the body.
The body was sent to a hospital for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
While initial suspicion points towards death due to excessive intoxication, police officials said that the actual cause will only be confirmed after the post-mortem report is received. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
