A man accused of posing as a member of the Border Security Force (BSF) and allegedly cheating local traders over an extended period was detained by business owners in Panisagar and later handed over to the police.
According to local sources, the accused had been moving around Panisagar Market, Chamtilla, Bilthai, and nearby areas for nearly two years, introducing himself as a BSF personnel. The accused has been identified as Uttam Chakma, a resident of Ujan Machmara in Unakoti district. Several traders who claimed to have been cheated by him had reportedly been searching for him for a long time.
On Saturday, the traders managed to detain Chakma and took him to Panisagar Police Station. Subsequently, a formal complaint was lodged against him, and a case has been registered.
Police have launched an investigation into the matter. Authorities are examining whether any other individuals were involved in the alleged fraud and are looking into additional details that may emerge during the course of the investigation.
Further investigation is underway.
