A wave of public anger disrupted normal life in North Tripura on Monday after residents staged a road blockade protesting deteriorating civic infrastructure and unresolved basic service issues.
In the Makumchhara area of North Tripura, locals blocked the main stretch of the Kanchanpur–Laljuri–Dharmanagar route, bringing traffic to a standstill. The agitation highlighted long-pending grievances related to damaged roads, inadequate drinking water supply, and inconsistent electricity services.
Makumchhara residents claimed that repeated appeals to authorities and local representatives have failed to bring meaningful improvement. They said the situation becomes especially severe during the rainy season when roads deteriorate further, making travel extremely difficult.
Protesters expressed frustration over the lack of development in the region and accused authorities of neglecting essential public needs. The demonstration also saw criticism directed at state minister Santana Chakma, with locals questioning the gap between electoral promises and on-ground realities.
The blockade caused significant disruption to vehicular movement along the busy corridor, leaving commuters stranded for hours and affecting daily transportation in the region.
