In a significant anti-drug operation in Tripura, police detained two people after recovering a large consignment of cannabis from a vehicle during coordinated checkpoint action across Dhalai and Unakoti districts.

Acting on specific intelligence, officers first intercepted a suspected vehicle near Durga Chowmuhani in Kamalpur under Dhalai district. According to SDPO Utpalendu Debnath, the occupants allegedly tried to evade scrutiny by giving false identities and even claiming links with local organisations. Their suspicious behaviour led to further questioning, after which they reportedly resisted police and fled the spot.

Following this, alert messages were circulated and checkpoints were reinforced across the area. Acting on the inputs, another team set up a blockade at Demdum Naka Point in Fatikroy under Kumarghat subdivision of Unakoti district. When the same vehicle attempted to cross the barricade, it reportedly tried to force its way through but was ultimately stopped by security personnel.

A detailed search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 271 kg of dry cannabis packed into 167 packets, with an estimated value of around Rs 15 lakh. Both individuals inside the vehicle were arrested on the spot.

Police have stated that further investigation is underway to identify and dismantle the wider network behind the illegal consignment.
