Tripura Police carried out a major anti-smuggling operation and seized a large consignment of illegal foreign cigarettes valued at around Rs 6 lakh during a routine check at Laljuri Check Post in North Tripura district.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the Officer-in-Charge of Laljuri Out Post, along with other personnel, conducted a targeted vehicle inspection at the checkpoint. During the operation, a vehicle bearing registration number TR-02N-0726 was stopped and searched thoroughly.

Upon inspection, police recovered approximately 196 bundles containing about 39,200 sticks of foreign cigarettes suspected to be illegally transported. The seized consignment is estimated to have a black market value of nearly Rs 6 lakh.

Following the seizure, both the vehicle and the contraband were taken into custody under Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and legal proceedings have been initiated.

Authorities stated that the operation was based on credible intelligence and reaffirmed their continued efforts to curb smuggling and the illegal trade of contraband goods in the state. Investigations are ongoing to trace the origin and intended destination of the seized consignment.
