A controversy has erupted after a young Bengali woman from Tripura was allegedly harassed and labeled a “Bangladeshi” while traveling on a public bus in Kolkata.

A video of the incident, which has since gone viral on social media, has triggered widespread debate and condemnation from various quarters.

According to reports, the woman has been living and working in Kolkata for the past four to five years. The incident reportedly occurred when she was speaking in a regional Bengali dialect commonly used in Tripura. Some passengers allegedly questioned her identity and referred to her as a “Bangladeshi” based solely on her accent.

In the viral video, the woman can be seen firmly defending herself and asserting that she is an Indian citizen. She questioned the logic of identifying someone as a foreign national simply because of a regional accent or linguistic variation. She also pointed out that many people from Tripura, Assam, and other northeastern states live and work across West Bengal while naturally retaining the linguistic characteristics of their home regions.

The video quickly gained attention online, prompting strong reactions from social media users. Many have criticized the alleged behavior as discriminatory and contrary to the spirit of India’s constitutional values, which celebrate diversity and equality. Numerous individuals have expressed solidarity with the woman and called for greater respect toward linguistic and cultural differences.

The incident has also reignited concerns about discrimination faced by people from India’s northeastern states. Residents of the region have long reported instances of prejudice based on language, appearance, and cultural identity in different parts of the country.

Observers have drawn parallels with previous incidents involving alleged bias against northeastern communities. Many argue that such episodes highlight the need for greater awareness, sensitivity, and inclusiveness in a country as diverse as India.

Public voices across social and civic platforms have demanded appropriate action against those responsible for the alleged harassment. They have also emphasized the importance of fostering mutual respect among citizens regardless of their language, ethnicity, religion, or regional background.

The incident has generated considerable anger and concern in Tripura and other northeastern states, with many stressing that every Indian citizen deserves dignity and respect wherever they live or work. Commentators note that honoring India’s linguistic and cultural diversity is essential for strengthening social harmony and national unity.
