A horrifying incident of domestic violence has sent shockwaves across Deowanpasha area under Dharmanagar police station in North Tripura district after a woman was allegedly attacked by her husband with a sharp weapon on Wednesday night.
The victim, identified as Shilpi Sen Barman (45), sustained severe injuries and is currently battling for her life at Dharmanagar District Hospital. The accused, Joydeb Barman (50), a resident of Kanchanpur, has been arrested by police following the incident.
According to local sources, the couple had shifted to a rented house in Ward No. 3 of Deowanpasha in December last year. Since then, frequent quarrels and domestic disputes reportedly disturbed the neighborhood.
The landlord, Shashanka Debnath, stated that tension between the husband and wife had continued for a long time. In an effort to restore peace, local residents and members of a social organization had repeatedly intervened and even held meetings on Wednesday to resolve the matter.
Sources revealed that the victim had recently filed a complaint at the women’s police station in Dharmanagar regarding missing divorce-related documents. She allegedly accused her husband of concealing those papers. The situation reportedly worsened after police contacted the accused over the complaint.
The brutal attack came to light after the landlord’s son heard desperate screams from inside the house and rushed to investigate. Upon entering the room, he reportedly found Shilpi lying on the floor in a blood-soaked condition. The accused allegedly fled from the scene carrying a sharp dao.
Local residents immediately informed emergency services and local representatives, including former MLA Molina Debnath. Fire and emergency personnel quickly arrived at the spot and shifted the critically injured woman to Dharmanagar District Hospital for treatment.
Doctors attending the victim said she suffered a deep cut injury on the back side of her neck caused by the sharp weapon. Her condition remains critical, and she is under constant medical supervision.
Former MLA Molina Debnath and other local leaders later visited the hospital to check on the victim’s condition and assured all possible assistance to the family.
Meanwhile, Tripura Police launched an operation and successfully apprehended the accused husband. He is currently in police custody, while police have initiated a detailed investigation into the incident.
