Tripura’s health sector undergoing major overhaul: CM

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha today reiterated the state government's commitment to transforming Tripura into a medical hub, ensuring that citizens no longer need to travel outside the state for advanced medical treatment.

Speaking at a program held at the Vivekananda Auditorium of Tripura Medical College (TMC) in Hapania, Dr. Saha emphasized the government's ongoing efforts to upgrade the state’s healthcare infrastructure under the Bharatiya Janata Party-led administration.

“We are committed to building a robust healthcare system within Tripura. The government is working relentlessly to make quality healthcare accessible to all. Our aim is that no one should be forced to leave Tripura in search of treatment,” said Dr. Saha, who also holds the Health portfolio.

The event featured several public welfare initiatives including a blood donation camp, Van Mahotsav celebrations, free distribution of orthotics for hip and knee replacement patients, and free spectacles for children below 14 years.

Reflecting on his association with TMC, Dr. Saha said, “This institution holds a special place in my heart. I spent an important phase of my life here, and returning feels like coming home. Despite initial challenges, Tripura Medical College has made significant strides and is now firmly established in the healthcare landscape of the North East.”

He acknowledged the early hurdles faced by the college, particularly the shortage of faculty, but praised the institution’s progress, stating it now has the infrastructure and capability to stand on its own.

Highlighting the state’s initiatives since 2018, Dr. Saha noted that 9 super specialty services have been introduced at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), developed in a corporate-style setup at a cost of around ₹250 crore.

“Earlier, the health sector was neglected. But under the BJP-led government, substantial efforts have been made to improve facilities and services,” he said.

On the importance of blood donation, Dr. Saha remarked, “Blood has no religion—we are all human beings first. Blood donation promotes unity and health. Approximately 15% of our population has a negative blood group, and there is always a need. Currently, Tripura has 14 blood banks—12 government and 2 private.”

The Chief Minister also spoke about the recent establishment of the state’s first dental college, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi just seven months after its foundation was laid.

“The dental college now has 63 seats and adds to our expanding healthcare education infrastructure. We are determined to ensure that patients can receive advanced treatment right here in Tripura,” he added.

Dr. Saha concluded by reaffirming the state government’s vision of turning Tripura into a major medical destination in the North East.
