Tripura Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb on Monday held the previous Left Front government responsible for Agartala’s poor drainage and sewerage systems, claiming that the situation has improved significantly under the BJP-led administration.
"Before we came to power, waterlogging would persist for days. Now, it drains within a few hours," said Deb, adding that the current government has overhauled pumping systems and revived many long-neglected water bodies. "This is not a time for blame. Our priority is to ensure timely help for those in distress," he said.
Deb made the statement while visiting a relief camp where 103 families have taken shelter, adding that he would inspect other camps as well.
“The state government, under Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, has done everything necessary through the administration. People have told me they are receiving food and medicines on time,” he noted.
He further informed that 18 rescue teams have been deployed across the state and around 2,800 families have taken shelter due to heavy rainfall.
“Monsoon arrived earlier than expected this year, and drainage work has been ongoing in preparation,” he added.
Highlighting the infrastructure efforts, Deb said, “Where there were only three water pumps earlier, we have now installed nearly 20 more. Road and pond construction is also underway. Previously, there were no proper drains—just bamboo-clogged pathways where water would stagnate. We’ve built large drainage channels and are also working on smaller ones.”
Deb also pointed out that heavy rainfall has affected the entire Northeast, but asserted that prompt drainage arrangements in Agartala have helped reduce the impact of flooding.
